On my Savage, and I think on all U.S. Savages, the brass plug is covered with a light dash of white paint. The paint was so faint that at first I did not notice it. Just to be absolutely clear (not insulting anyone's intelligence), you are looking for this plug while looking at the outside of the carb body on the right side of the bike (when facing forward, the side opposite the kick stand). You can't adjust it from inside the carb when it is opened for spacer removal.
Make the mix richer (more gas in relationship to air) by turning the screw to the left (counterclockwise), then adjust the idle (other side of bike) so you don't stall. Takes some trial and error, but you will be able to get the mix rich enough to stop backfiring while keeping the idle fast enough to prevent stalling, but still slow enough to have a mellow pace while stopped.
